Just Getting Started

There’s this guy. He’s been pretty interested in writing for a while but just can’t get himself started. He’s read dozens of articles about writing and how to start. He’s even put into practice some of the tips and started writing down ideas as often as they come to mind and in fact, has several unfinished articles sitting on his computer. He even went so far as to sign up fully for Medium in order to inspire himself to begin while also eliminating the excuse of not having a platform on which to write.

You probably guessed it already, but this guy is me.

For whatever reason, I have had such a challenge in actually sitting down to write and deliver the content I want to share. Perhaps it’s because I don’t think my ideas or insights are revolutionary enough. Perhaps its nervousness in doing a new thing that is completely foreign to me. It could even be apprehension, or fear, about how my writing is received and what is thought of it (I know I’m not supposed to care much about that, but I am human after all).

There could be and probably are tons of reasons as to what was preventing me; ultimately, the solution to overcome this is to create momentum. However, it has to be built, momentum doesn’t just happen on its own and in reality, it doesn’t take much for it to build. It simply takes movement towards the thing you have in mind to begin that momentum. Like a boulder rolling down a hill, all it takes is a little nudge to get it moving and, once it’s going, anything in its way will be hard-pressed to slow it down or stop it.

Motivational author Steve Maraboli says “An inch of movement will bring you closer to your goals than a mile of intention.” I have a goal of writing; of sharing what I know to hopefully benefit others. I love sharing information and insight whether it’s something I learned from someone else or something I learned through experience. But that’s never going to happen unless I move an inch, nudge the boulder, or start the momentum.

This brief post is my first step forward, the first little bit of kinetic energy from which momentum will help me to keep moving and making progress in my writing. This post is my endeavor to finally get started.
